What’s in a Name?

Northport Baptist Is Now Island Christian Church

Founded in 1945, the first meetings of the Northport Baptist Church were held at 55 Main Street in the quaint village of Northport. After moving to larger and larger locations within the village, it moved to its present location, at the corners of Elwood and Clay Pitts Roads in 1964. Since that time, two major building expansions were completed in order to meet the needs of the growing church.

The next expansion would not be to its existing building, but eastward.

After doing extensive research of Suffolk County in 2008-09, along with prayerful consideration for an eastern location, it was determined that Brookhaven, one of the County’s fastest growing towns, which had a relatively small number of evangelical churches serving its communities, would become the home of Island Christian Church, the name of our eastern campus. In fact, even before the official launch was made in Holtsville in September 2010, the Lord presented us with another church building, right in the heart of Port Jefferson Village. So as a church now with three campuses, it became clear that we needed one name that better represents our commitment to serving multiple communities on Long Island.

Island Christian Church— our name has changed to better communicate that we are His Church. What hasn’t changed is our adherence to the Bible in all matters of faith and practice. Island Christian Church is on a mission to love and serve this Island with the Good News of Jesus Christ. As we like to say, “new church name, same great God!”
