Leaving a Generous Inheritance in Financially Hard Times

Scripture— Psalm 78:1-7

Leaving A Generous Inheritance in Financially Hard Times

O my people, hear my teaching;

listen to the words of my mouth.

2 I will open my mouth in parables,

I will utter hidden things, things from of old--

3 what we have heard and known,

what our fathers have told us.

4 We will not hide them from their children;

we will tell the next generation

the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD,

his power, and the wonders he has done.

5 He decreed statutes for Jacob

and established the law in Israel,

which he commanded our forefathers

to teach their children,

6 so the next generation would know them,

even the children yet to be born,

and they in turn would tell their children.

7 Then they would put their trust in God

and would not forget his deeds

but would keep his commands.

Main Idea—What We Leave—Spiritually & Personally as Well as Financially—Is A Result of a Spiritually Disciplined Life

An inheritance is a discipline in that it can be forfeited [as Reuben and Esau show us from Scripture]

The inheritance of the blessing and love of those in our lives is an inheritance that is worth more than money. [see Proverbs 22:1] Remember the contrast between the legacy of Jukes and the legacy of Jonathan Edwards.

Some aspects of a good name:

  • The memory of an authentic Christian home
  • The legacy of hard work and sacrifice
  • A productive and meaningful retirement
  • Investing in Kingdom things
  • Make a thoughtful last will and testament [see Proverbs 20:21]

Application—

  • What legacy have you received that you can truly thank God for?
  • If you were to pass from life to eternity this week, what legacy would those who know you receive as a result of your life?
  • Psalm 78 tells us to share two things with the next generation. What are they from the portion of Scripture above? How are you doing in passing these on? What are some effective ways to do this?
